Orthodontists can correct a range of tooth alignment issues, from general crowding to issues with the way the teeth bite together. Below are a few examples of alignment and bite issues that we can correct.
Crowding
This is where the teeth overlap, which occurs when there is not enough space for all of the teeth. Often oral hygiene issues occur with crowding, as the teeth are difficult to clean when they are overlapping. Orthodontic treatment of crowding can help to improve oral hygiene for future dental and periodontal (gum) health.
Spacing
This is the opposite of crowding, where there is so much room for the teeth that there are spaces between them. This can also cause oral hygiene problems, as food can get stuck in the spaces between the teeth.
Overbite (overjet)
When biting on the molars, the upper front teeth stick out past the lower front teeth. Untreated malocclusion (bad bite) can cause unnecessary wear and tear on your teeth.
Open bite
When biting on the molars, the upper and lower front teeth do not meet. This can make biting into foods more difficult, and causes excessive wear on the molars.
Underbite (reverse overjet)
This is the opposite of an overbite. When biting on the molars, the upper front teeth sit behind the lower front teeth. As with overbites, untreated underbites can cause unnecessary wear on your teeth.
Crossbite
This is where the upper and lower jaws are misaligned and can cause excessive wear on your teeth.
